Legions

PG-13 horror from Argentina

Legions

A powerful warlock must save his daughter from an evil entity that wants to sacrifice her for some pretty standard reasons.

Antonio Poyju is a shaman from a powerful lineage of demon fighters, who is currently being held in an asylum against his will. After an ill omen warns him that a demonic enemy has returned and is targeting his estranged daughter, Antonio must escape, repair their familial bond, and remind her of her heritage, so that they can work together, and banish the fiend.

Legions, also known as Cosa e' Mandinga, is an Argentinian supernatural horror film written and directed by Fabián Forte, who is very obviously hugely influenced by Sam Raimi, as the film is generally a pale shadow of Evil Dead. Very average, obviously low budget, light on gore and horror, with only a couple of good jokes overall, Legions is nothing really noteworthy. There’s just way too much uninspired homage and cribbed style here, and not nearly enough originality, innovation, or distinctive voice.

But on the other hand…

I can kind of appreciate foreign films that are doing really basic-ass stories in mediocre ways, just like the majority of American releases, because it makes me feel like there truly is a much wider range of choices available now than ever before for the average viewer.

So, there’s that at least.

But yeah, other than that… there’s not much else.
