Nimona

A knight is framed for a crime he didn't commit, and the only person who can help him prove his innocence is Nimona, a shape-shifting teen troublemaker who might also be the monster that he's sworn to kill.

Within an isolated and walled-in metropolis, in a futuristic fantasy world, Ballister Boldheart is the first commoner to become a knight in an aristocratic order that is sworn to protect the great walled city from the monsters that lurk outside. But when he is accused of a crime he didn't commit, turning his fellow knight, and his one true love, Ambrosius Goldenloin, against him, his only friend is Nimona, a shape-shifting, rebellious little malcontent in a Chelsea cut.

Nate Diana “Indy” Stevenson, known professionally as ND Stevenson, has been the creator, showrunner, and executive producer of the She-Ra cartoon, as well as a co-writer of the comic book Lumberjanes, and is currently the voice behind the online comic I’m Fine I’m Fine Just Understand.

Nimona is based of his graphic novel.

Nimona the character mostly presents as a pink-haired young woman, but she is also an otter, an ostrich, a rhinoceros, a gorilla, a cat, a rat, a girl, a boy, a cartoon dragon, and a blue (pink) whale, all with a “Let’s break some shit” attitude and a mischievous snicker. She is basically a punk rock Bugs Bunny/Deadpool, and also a very obvious queer allegory.

Once almost a Disney movie, it took nearly a decade for Annapurna to deliver a decent and much glitzier adaptation of the source material, in a film that is all about the dangers of ignorance, fear, and xenophobia, a film that is talking directly about the bigoted Christian politicians who united their fellow bigots on a platform of hate that is built on the backs of queer and transgender children.

Nimona is not just a good time, it speaks directly to people whose “insides feel itchy” when the world doesn’t want them to be who they truly are.

It’s a good thing that is good to watch.

Set in a He-Man meets The Princess Bride type of world, and featuring the voice talents of Chloe Grace Moretz (The Periphreal) as Nimona, and Riz Ahmed (Rogue One) as Ballister, this is a fun, funny, heartfelt, and action-packed tale of friendship, love, and found families, that delivers the kind of message our society needs (one that will piss off the terrible white Christian bigots too, that is, if they’re smart enough to actually notice it), all told with a riotous “Fuck you! Burn it all down!” style that will definitely blow some 12 year old minds.

In a nutshell, Nimona is great fun for the whole family from start to finish, and is totally worth checking out.
